== Nighthawk 4.0 (nighthawk-4.0.tar.xz) ==
(Oct 96 - Present) Status: GPL / Orphaned

This is a restored Linux arcade game I wrote in the 1990s that is based on a 1980s Commodore-64 game called Paradroid. This restored C/C++ game now has OpenGL and OpenAL support and works on all Linux distributions as well as Apple OS/X.

See below for some vimeo video demonstrations:

Nighthawk is a tribute to one of the most playable and contagious games ever written: Paradroid by Andrew Braybrook. Originally written for X-Windows (xlib) and Open Sound System, Nighthawk gained popularity when released in December 1997, and continued its popularity in the late 90s. However, it didn't make it onto the major distributions for release. After that, it slowly lost interest by the open source public.

In mid-2003, Eric Gillespie took over the development this game and created the game's SourceForge website. Eric (who is not a programmer) hoped to attract developers to the project in order to moderise it for the latest plaforms and distributions. However, this did not eventuate. Over the years, Nighthawk slowly became unbuildable, and faded into oblivion.

In August 2020, I decided to restore this game, because I was sad that it had become derelict on Eric Gillespie's Sourceforge web site. I felt it was unfinished business that it wasn't properly distributed. So, here it is. After 23 years since first release, It's back ! :D. Hopefully it gains popularity again, and is picked up by a Linux distributor.

Eric leads this project and is the point of contact. At the time of this writing, he is currently getting the SourceForge web site and git repository ready for release. PLUS, work is being planned for a version of Nighthawk which will include a new fleet developed by Eric, plus some new droid types for his new fleet. In the mean time, I have made the game source code available in the links at the bottom of this page. A special thanks to giantclambake for packaging this game into a debian package and hosting this wonderful site for me. This deb package is available at the bottom of this page.

To install the Nighthawk 4.0 Debian package, type: "sudo apt --fix-broken install ./nighthawk-4.0_amd64.deb".
